Any user values its smartphone and doesn't see it as a simple object. Despite other objects, you have the smartphone with you for the whole day, and it's your most helpful companion. Let's assume that a random stranger asks you to borrow your phone for a short call. Most of us will have second thoughts when it comes to that. You would want to help that guy, but you would think: "What if he just runs away with it?" And this isn't just about the phone itself. It's about the data on it. You wouldn't take the risk of loosing all the precious data, just to do a good deed.
Also, users always feel the urge to check their phone, to see if they didn't lose it. They do this so often that it became a reflex. User experience designers should understand these aspects and focus on the data security and tracing features, in case the phone gets lost. If you know that a phone can have all its data recovered / encrypted and that it can be easily traced in case it gets lots, you will be more likely to purchase that phone. We have to worry about plenty of things in our daily lives, and we would be willing to spend a little extra money for a secured phone.
